Adoption
All that is needed to adopt an animal from our shelter is Proof of Identity, Complete the Adoption Application, and Provide the Appropriate Adoption Fee.
$75.00 Fee for dogs which includes a $50.00 Sterilization Deposit. $25.00 Adoption Fee if the dog has already been Spayed or Neutered.
$65.00 Fee for Cats which includes a $50.00 Sterilization Deposit. $15.00 Adoption Fee if the cat has already been Spayed of Neutered.
Sterilization Deposits will be reimbursed by the Washington County, VA Board of Supervisors. Once the proper documentation has been completed by a licensed Veterinarian and returned to the Animal Shelter, the reimbursement will be submitted to the Board of Supervisors.
No. Some of the animals, in the animal shelter, are on a stray-holds, they are being held for court cases, or may be quarantined due negative exposure to humans. Animals that are available for adoption will be advertised by the shelter staff.
Volunteer
Currently, we are not accepting volunteers to work at the Washington County, VA Animal Shelter.
Donation
Yes. In-kind donations are preferred when donating. We accept dog food(wet and dry), cat food(wet and dry), cat litter, cleaning supplies, etc. Please contact the shelter if you wish to know more about what type of supplies the shelter may need.
Pet Care
All animal owners in Virginia and Washington County are required to take care of their pets and their needs per Commonwealth of VA , CODE 3.2-6503 and Washington County, VA CODE 10-3. – Care of companion animals by owner.
Essentially, according to both state and county code, animal owners are to
1. Provide Adequate Feed.
2. Provide Adequate Water.
3. Provide Adequate Shelter that is Properly Cleaned.
4. Provide Adequate Space in the Primary Enclosure for the Particular Type of Animal, etc.
5. Adequate Exercise.
6. Adequate Care, Treatment, and Transportation.
7. Provide Veterinary Care When Needed.
Contact the Washington County VA Sheriff’s Office-Animal Control Division and make a report of neglect or abuse.
